For our Artifact Friday today, we are going to do something a little different and talk about women’s service in the United States military!

James Allen Swearingen was born on June 11, 1977. From a very young age, his mom, Jannie, could tell that he was special.

Eighty-one years ago today, the United States Navy, Marine Corps, and Army Air Corps bases in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, were unexpectedly attacked by the Navy and Air Forces of the Imperial Japanese Empire.

Gary Michael Rose was born in Watertown, New York, on October 17, 1947.

Lloyd Burke was born in Tichnor, Arkansas, in 1920 and spent the majority of his growing-up years around that area.

James Lamar Stone was born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas in 1922. He spent most of his childhood and high school years in Hot Springs, Arkansas, before going to the University of Arkansas.

In 1930, Herbert Littleton was born in Mena, Arkansas, to Paul N. and Lillie Maude Littleton.

During the wars of Korea and Vietnam, hundreds of Arkansas residents served overseas, and a number of them distinguished themselves sacrificially winning the Congressional Medal of Honor.

As September closes and October is ushered in, people’s thoughts turn to the holiday season, especially that of Halloween.
