George Leonard McCandless was born on November 17th, 1938 in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and grew up during and in the aftermath of World War II.

Drake Field was acquired by the city of Fayetteville in 1929 thanks to a professor at the University of Arkansas, Dr. Noah Drake, who donated $3,500 (a stunning $64,283.13 in 2024) to purchase the land.

The Civilian Pilot Training Program (CPTP) started in the 1930s, training college students to fly. This program grew larger and faster than anticipated, and thus, they did not have enough aircraft for it.
