During World War 2, this biplane, the Boeing-Stearman Kaydet, was one of the most widely used trainers in the United States. It was based on the original Stearman Kaydet and was produced by Boeing until 1945.

At least 10,346 aircraft were built to meet the needs of the USAAF and US Navy. Several versions were manufactured, differing in their engines and equipment. The US Navy gave these aircraft the basic designation of N2S.
